Shivahari was born in a pious Brahmin family. They lived in a small village in the south of India, where people lived in harmony. He was consulted on all matters. Being a Brahmin he had studied the Vedas and was a talented astrologer. Brahmins are the priestly class of people, who engaged themselves in the study and teaching of the scriptures. They were respected for the pure life they live. In the village lived the kshatriyas, vaishyas and shudras. Kshatriyas are people who are people belonging to warrior class. Though they have the rights to study Vedas, no one does it. And most of them they are engaged in business than in learning the art of warfare. Vaishyas are people belonging to Business class, who also seldom study the Vedas. And the shudras are people who do all the menial task for all. Now, though this class system is in disarray. The Brahmins are the only people who to some extent try to follow the scriptural way of life.
As in the case of Brahmin families, Shivahari was initiated with the scared thread at the age of eight. Before being initiated into this samskara the kid is one who though by birth may belong to a particular varna – caste does not belong to it in proper sense. And he also does not belong to any ashrama – the way of life. Only after the initiation of the sacred thread he is accepted to be a Bramachari, a bachelor or celibate. This makes the, the Brahmins, kshatriyas and vaishyas twice born. That is, first birth from the womb, and the second birth because of the Sacred thread. And was sent away to study Vedas. Only after the being initiated with the sacred thread and the Gayatri mantra, which is also called as brahmopadesa, a person gains the eligibility to study the Vedas. Gayatri is the mantra which is in the meter Gayatri and is a mantra for the Savita devata, which is the Sun god. And it is called as brahmopadesa because, this mantra is accepted as the essence of all the Vedas. Shivahari was sent to the veda patashala, the school of the Vedas along with his friend and neighbour Raman, who is of the same age as him. After completing the study of Vedas, with the permission of the guru got the avabruta snana samskara done along with the samavartana samskaras, which is like the convocation. After the study of Vedas, the disciples have choice, they can either stay as a celibate in the school and serve his Guru or to go back and get married. Those who choose the celibate way of life and assist the guru are called as Naistika bramacharis, the bramacharis who have taken the vow of celibacy. Shivahari and his friend according to their parents wish chose to enter grihasta ashrama, householder. To do that they underwent the karma samskaras, which are a kind of purificatory rights to take to the life of householder. And after completing the samskaras and taking the permission of their guru they came back to the village.
